Cotswold Montessori School

"More than childcare...a real, proper school for little people!"

A typical day

This is what one of our normal days looks like.

9:00 – 9:30  Greeting & Settling in

We like coming to school. No one makes a fuss if we are ever late and our mummies/daddies/carers can stay for as long as they want to make sure we are o.k. But they don't need to worry - there are so many fun things to do here that soon we are working very hard with our friends.

9:30 – 11:45 ‘Work Period’

Our ‘work period’ is a time when we are allowed to choose what we want to work with – we can do lots of different things every day! When we have chosen what we want to do, we take it and find a table or a mat on the floor. Then we can work for as long as we want – sometimes by ourselves, sometimes with friends. When we have finished, we pack everything away and put it back on the shelf where we found it so that someone else can work with it. When we are hungry or thirsty we can make our own snacks and when we are tired we can go to the quiet area for a rest. We also like to go out into the garden to play - most of us do this every day. Our teachers watch us to see what we like and don’t like, what we’re good at and what is still a little bit difficult. Then they think about it and put out new activities so that we always have something good to work with. We learn lots of new things and if it is sometimes a little bit difficult one of our friends or teachers can always help us. Our teachers say that working like this builds our independence, self-belief, focus, and concentration. We are not quite sure what this means, but it’s fun anyway.

11:45 – 12:00 Circle Time

This is a time when we all come together as a group and take turns talking and listening – we really like ‘Show & Tell’ and ‘Letter of the Week’ or looking at something interesting or asking people who come to visit us questions.

12:00 - 12:30 Lunch
We all sit down to have lunch together - of course we remember to wash our hands before we start. We also try to use our best table manners and talk about foods that help our bodies grow strong and stay healthy.

12:30 – 13:15 Group Activity

Every day it’s also nice to do something with all of the children in our group. We do lots of fun things called science experiments, music & movement or cooking. Otherwise we love, love, LOVE climbing on our climbing frame or playing in our play house.

13:15 – 13:30 Home Time

Everyone is tired now and it’s time to go home but there is always time for a story and a few songs. Some of us like it here so much that we don't want to go home, but when we do, we try to remember to say 'bye' to all our friends and shake hands and make eye-contact with our teachers. (This is still quite difficult for some of us.)

See you all tomorrow...
